30 km north of Montpellier in the northern area of the Coteaux du Languedoc appellation, stands the Pic Saint Loup (alt. 650 m), first spur of the Cévennes (south of the Massif Central). A ruined medieval castle lies on the hilltop and its slopes fall away as cliffs in the northeast. Its less precipitous southwest side with its calcareous scree leads down to the coomb of Mortiès.
